Source for quote by Katherine Hepburn

  • In an online article from CNN found at www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/29/hepburn.obit/, Katherine Hepburn is quoted as saying, "I often wonder whether men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then." Where, when, and to whom did she say this? Was it in an interview, a movie, or somewhere else? Please Help!

  • My goodness. This quote is all over the Web, and everyone is attributing it to Kate Hepburn, but nobody seems to be very specific! Here is an excerpt from a book about the great love stories of modern times. In a chapter about Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, this passage appears: "I have always thought that marriage was a funny sort of institution," she [Katharine Hepburn] explained. "Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other at all. It's inevitable that they should come together now and again, but how well suited are they to living in the same house? Perhaps they should live next door and visit every now and then." That's the most complete version of the quote that I have seen. If information about the book in which the quote above may be found would be a satisfactory answer to your question, please let me know.

  • Please forgive the delay. Hectic life. I do think the quote you have is what I'm looking for. If the book it comes from has the exact place (interview or what?), time (year), and person (who did she say this to?), then I'd say you've got the answer. As it stands, your info is the closest I've come to an answer. I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi questions7, Not to butt in here on Pink's good work, but I have found reference to a magazine source for your quote just as you wrote it (which is likely just a shortened version of the one Pink found) All I have is the title of a well-known magazine and year, no hint as to context. The book I found it in, however, is a credible reference. I guess which one came first would be relevant if we are looking for the ultimate source ...my reference says 1980. How would you like to proceed? -K~

  • Sorry, but the source I mentioned does not give the additional info that you need (exact place, time, and person). I haven't been able to find any version of the quote that is that specific.

  • Hi questions7, I see that your question expires tomorrow. Have you decided whether or not you'd like me to post the information I have as an answer? After tomorrow it will be too late. As I said, I have the year (1980) and the name of the magazine where the quote apparently appeared first. According to the author of the book I would be referencing in my answer, "In order to assure myself and guarantee you of accuracy, I have examined the original source of almost every quotation." Please let me know if you'd like my answer posted. -K~

  • Hi K, Yes, I'd very much like for you to post the answer. Thank you for reminding me about the expiration! If you have the full quote, I think I'm done. If not, I'm willing to pay pinkfreud 30.00 as well for that. Congratulations and thanks again, q7

  • Hi questions7-ga, I?m so glad you made it back here ? and with hours to spare! Ok, here?s what I have ?-- "I often wonder whether men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then." --Katherine Hepburn, in Esquire Magazine (1980) Source: The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women (1996) Rosalie Maggio, Editor. Beacon Press, Boston. p. 754 #12. Here is a link to the 1998 edition of the book (a bit newer than mine so page number may vary): AMAZON : The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0807067830/qid=1078102888//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i8_xgl14/104-5998067-0071134?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 Here?s what Maggio has to say about the sources of her quotes: "In order to assure myself and guarantee you of accuracy, I have examined the original source of almost every quotation. Approximately three percent of the quotations were unfindable in the original ? by me at this time, at any rate. When I was unable to locate the original quotation, I have credited the earliest publication of it in a secondary source.? I did spend some time trying to track down which issue of Esquire the quote was in, but was unable to find anything online. Esquire Online doesn?t maintain archives before 1997. The only 1980 Esquire issue I could find online was from April. It?s here, but says nothing about what?s inside. (You could always email and ask) Esquire Magazine - April 1980 http://www.rubylane.com/shops/momentsintime/item/Magx2043 However, equipped with the magazine and the year you should be able to quickly track down the right issue at your library. As for paying PinkFreud for finding the full text of the quote, you can do that by posting a new question just for her. Direct it to her by using her name in the subject line. I?m glad we were able to help you get closer to the source of your quote. Thanks for your question. -K~ Search Strategy: Index of my well-worn copy of ?Beacons Book of Quotations by Women?
